Eggplant Network FAQ

What is the difference between point-to-point and dual-hop?

Point-to-point allows you to connect two end points; for example, London to New York. You can then define one or more network links between the end points.

Dual hop allows you to connect three end points, for example, London to New York to Boston. You can then define one or more network links between the end points. So London to New York could be a 10mbps WAN and New York to Boston a T1 network link.

What is a link?

A link is a network connection between two end points; for example London to New York. You set the bandwidth, latency, loss, etc on each link. A link is bidirectional; that is, it has both an up and a down link.

Why would I use more than one link?

If you wanted to test an application over 2G, 3G, and 4G, you would need to enable three links

Why are some links grayed out?

Additional links are disabled by default. Select the link and use the slider at the top of the page to enable it. The link changes to green. Remove any disabled links before starting the emulation. An error shows if there are unconfigured links.

How can I get more links?

The number of links are controlled by the license key. If you require more links, contact your sales representative.

Why are ports 2 & 3 unavailable?

The system license controls access to the ports. If they’re unavailable, it’s likely because of a restriction in the license.

What network speed do the ports use?

Port speed is set by the license and varies between model. Review the specification sheet for your emulator.

Can I speed up the boot-up time?

Connecting the network management port and emulation ports before powering on the unit significantly improves the emulator’s start-up time.

How can I determine which traffic uses which link?

You can control which applications or IP addresses use which links by specifying the Link Qualification Criteria. This is available in the bottom half of the Basic page of the Link Properties dialog, or in the Link Qualification tab on the Advanced page of the Link Properties dialog.

How are latencies calculated?

There is a base latency that all networks have and a distance latency that is added to it. The distance latency is calculated by using the latitude and longitude of each location and is added to the base latency. The default latencies can be overridden in the GUI.

Can I use different subnets on each physical port?

The emulator can act as a router and forward traffic between different subnets defined on each port. To enable Port Addressing, click Emulation > Port Addressing, then click Enable Port Addressing , enter the addressing details, and click Update to enable.

How can I connect a mobile device to the emulator?

Configure a wireless access point and connect the phone to it. Now connect your wireless access Ethernet port to one of the emulator’s ports. The network traffic to the WAP can now be impeded.

Can I connect multiple machines to the emulator?

You can connect a hub or switch to any emulator port so that multiple machines can then use the emulated network conditions.

Why don’t I see any countries or locations listed?

Country and location information is retrieved as you type. For example, typing “Ind” lists India and Indonesia. You must select the country and city from the list. Country and location can be disabled by deselecting the Enable box.

Is it possible to manage emulations remotely?

A command-line interface (CLI) feature is provided with Eggplant Network models 5 and 20 and can be downloaded from the customer support portal. The CLI can perform functions such as listing, starting, and stopping emulations.
